our place
Nature Place
This is the place for nature junkies and backyard browsers, seriously equipped birders and knee-crawling bugologists, tree huggers and wilderness wanderers. We proudly carry the region's largest selection of nature guides and wildlife gardening resources, along with bird and insect CDs, posters, landscape photography, and nature writing by such luminaries as John Muir, Bernd Heinrich, and William Burt.
Do you know your way around bird nests and eggs as well as songs? Butterflies and moth caterpillars along with their food plants? Hawk and eagle silhouettes and hangouts? Frog sounds? Roadside plants? This the place to get that ideal take-along guide as well as stimulate those gray cells that build up your memory bank. We also carry the perfect binoculars and birdfeeders for those on a limited budget.
History Place
Here are books and artwork that disclose and celebrate our Midwestern past and present, including European immigrant groups, Ojibwe and Dakota life, the Upper Mississippi Corridor, and travel hotspots, with a little Ole and Lena thrown in. We also feature celebrated regional writers from Ben Logan and Paul Grachow to Jerry Apps, Garrison Keeler and the shop's own Paul Clifford Larson.
Wisconsin and Minnesota are the focus of this section of the shop, with multiple offerings from university and historical society presses. We also carry a growing collection of maps to guide nature-seekers and regional history buffs.
Imagination Place
Over 100 titles entrance children with the beauty and mystery of the natural world and draw them out-of-doors for personal discovery. We have titles for all age groups from such award-winning publishers as Dawn, Northword, Peach Tree, and Barefoot Books.
Our hands-on section offers a full range of Folkmanis hand and finger puppets and Audubon birds and animals with sounds—from bald eagles and ladybugs to wolves and woodpeckers. Premium-quality animal kites from New-Tech and Jackite hang from walls and ceiling.
